Known as the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D is an organic, fat-soluble nutrient naturally produced in the body. The Endocrine Society considers the upper limit of 2,000 IU to be generally safe and unlikely to cause adverse effects.

There are two forms of vitamin D in the body: vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is considered the 'active' form of vitamin D. It’s unlikely that vitamin D supplements will cause side effects from taking them; however, excessive intake of vitamin D, especially over a sustained period of time, may result in an excess of calcium levels in the blood, which carries symptoms including pain, nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, fatigue, and confusion.
